Whatʻs In Your Lip Balm?

Its that time of year, when we are constantly reaching for our lip balm to relieve that dry, burning, tight feeling we get right before chapped lips. The sooner we smother our lips in something hydrating the better; Anything to avoid the cracking, peeling and even bleeding that can happen once the chapped condition sets in and its too late! Then we fight the uphill battle of attempting to heal the chapped lips during the dry cold months of winter… UGH!

Many people are addicted to their lip balm, and this is why - Chapstick, Carmex, Blistex, just to name a few, all contain petrolatum which creates a barrier and provides temporary relief. “Temporary” being the key word here. The petroleum base cannot be absorbed by the lips and will actually dry them out even more. As soon as the Chapstick wears off, we are even more desperate to reapply the balm, thus continuing this viscous cycle, wishing for spring when our lips will heal again. Some of the leading brands also contain addictive ingredients such as caffeine and even aspirin.

What can you gain from this? Don’t use products that contain petroleum or chemicals on your lips, skin or hair. Fossil fuels cannot be absorbed by your skin and are better utilized for industrial purposes, like fueling an engine. The chemicals that are absorbed, such as chemical based sunscreen, can do more harm than good. In fact, the can actually cause skin cancer!

So what happened with EOS and the scandal with many of their customers getting horrible rashes, sores and blisters on their lips? EOS seem to have good ingredients and they are made in the USA, right? Well, lets hope they still are… Once companies get big, they usually go public or sellout to larger companies that cheapen their ingredients. To keep their investors happy, they cut corners where they can.  Itʻs all about profit!

Clorox bought Burt’s Bees a few years ago and the integrity of their products has significantly weakened since the buyout. EOS is has obviously changed something that they are not disclosing. With their recent overnight success, they’ve had to keep up with the demand and their product ingredients have likely cheapened because of this.

So what is safe? Well, to avoid this kind of issue, its best to buy products from smaller companies whoʻs products are handcrafted in small batches in the USA. Looking for the best lip balm?
