Whatʻs In Your Lip Balm?

Its that time of year, when we are constantly reaching for our lip balm to relieve that dry, burning, tight feeling we get right before chapped lips. The sooner we smother our lips in something hydrating the better; Anything to avoid the cracking, peeling and even bleeding that can happen once the chapped condition sets in and its too late! Then we fight the uphill battle of attempting to heal the chapped lips during the dry cold months of winter… UGH!

Many people are addicted to their lip balm, and this is why - Chapstick, Carmex, Blistex, just to name a few, all contain petrolatum which creates a barrier and provides temporary relief. “Temporary” being the key word here. The petroleum base cannot be absorbed by the lips and will actually dry them out even more. As soon as the Chapstick wears off, we are even more desperate to reapply the balm, thus continuing this viscous cycle, wishing for spring when our lips will heal again. Some of the leading brands also contain addictive ingredients such as caffeine and even aspirin.

What can you gain from this? Don’t use products that contain petroleum or chemicals on your lips, skin or hair. Fossil fuels cannot be absorbed by your skin and are better utilized for industrial purposes, like fueling an engine. The chemicals that are absorbed, such as chemical based sunscreen, can do more harm than good. In fact, the can actually cause skin cancer!

So what happened with EOS and the scandal with many of their customers getting horrible rashes, sores and blisters on their lips? EOS seem to have good ingredients and they are made in the USA, right? Well, lets hope they still are… Once companies get big, they usually go public or sellout to larger companies that cheapen their ingredients. To keep their investors happy, they cut corners where they can.  Itʻs all about profit!

Clorox bought Burt’s Bees a few years ago and the integrity of their products has significantly weakened since the buyout. EOS is has obviously changed something that they are not disclosing. With their recent overnight success, they’ve had to keep up with the demand and their product ingredients have likely cheapened because of this.

So what is safe? Well, to avoid this kind of issue, its best to buy products from smaller companies whoʻs products are handcrafted in small batches in the USA. Looking for the best lip balm? Coconut Clean makes a great variety of Lip Smoothies that are made from farm direct organic virgin coconut oil, organic shea butter, organic cocoa butter, organic hemp seed oil, vitamin E and flavored with essential oils and fruit oils. They come with or without natural sunblock that is mineral-based. The best part is that they come in layers of flavor, so itʻs like getting multiple lip balms in one tube. For those of you that are strictly vegan, check out the Bee Free Lip Smoothies! Go to coconutclean.com and enter code LIPBLOG at checkout to get 15% off of all lip products. Your lips will thank you!

Why quality ingredients matters:

Most all of us are watching our budgets these days and cutting corners where we can. We are faced with many choices and compromises to make ends meet.  We want to eat healthy, so we spend our money on organic and non GMO foods as an investment in our health. Yet we often don't think of what we put on our skin and hair as an equally important investment in our health.

If you eat healthy but bathe with products made from chemical sources, you can undo the efforts of a good diet.  Skin is the bodyʻs largest organ and absorbs everything it comes in contact with.  There are many unhealthy additives in everyday skin care and bath products that most of us aren't aware of. It is crucial to read labels! Many of the bad ingredients in personal care products are directly linked to cancer and auto-immune diseases.

Coconut Clean was founded because of a quest for healthy skin care products. After a scary bout with melanoma, I became very aware of what I put on my skin.  During the research process, I was horrified to learn what is allowed in the products we use everyday.  I discovered that many of the "natural" products contained unhealthy ingredients. I realized the only way I could trust the quality of what I put on my skin was to make it myself. Having a background in aromatherapy and chemistry made this possible, so it became my lifeʻs mission to create something good for myself and everyone!
Our goal is to provide the cleanest products on the market. We take pride in the pure ingredients our products are made from… Our soap is our passion and we have Organic Soap for sale. You can find handmade, natural bar soap all over the internet, at your local farmers market or crafts fair, perhaps priced cheaper than ours… Why is ours more expensive? INGREDIENTS!  We refuse to compromise our quality. Many soap crafters make their soaps with a melt & pour soap base, which contain cheap chemical ingredients. We use the cold-process method to make ours from scratch and never cheapen the blend by using soybean oil, corn oil, palm oil, canola oil. These are grown from genetically modified seeds, are harmful to the environment and provide little or no benefits for your skin. Most soap crafters cut their bars a little smaller and don't cure them as long as we do, which produces a harsher soap. We invite you to read our ingredient labels and be proud to use products that are truly good for you and the world.

Take the Coconut Oil CleanseOrganic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is our founding ingredient! Organic Coconut Oil for Hair and skin care is the best thing you can use. We scent our divine soaps with essential oils and botanical extracts, not synthetic fragrance.  We strive to bring you the best possible products that last longer and are far more beneficial for your health. From our Hawaiian Sea Salt Scrubs to our petroleum-free lip smoothies, we strive for chemical free purity at affordable prices. Here are a list of ingredients you should avoid while shopping for personal care products, just to name a few! Basic rule: If your not sure what it is, there is a good chance you should avoid it...

Aloha Coconutters!

We are back to blogging and we have many new things happening in 2013.  In case you haven't heard, we have a brand-new website! It officially went live on February 1st  and we are making it better everyday by adding new descriptions and photos.  The new site is easy to use and has a nicely functional shopping cart with a new PayPal gateway that keeps you on our website for flawless checkout. We've had great feedback so far.  Go to www.coconutclean.com and tell us what you think!

While your there,  post a review and it will be entered in our giveaway. Once we receive at least 10 new reviews, we will resume the contest.  The new website has inspired several new reviews, so we are getting close! Here are the new contest guidelines:

- Write us a review (or two, or three) on a product that youʻve tried and post it on our website or send it along to coconutcleanblog@gmail.com for consideration.

- Write about one product per review.

- Include a rating (0-5 stars) as well as your email address (which, will of course remain private), your name, and where you are from.

- Please, enter as many times as you like, although only one review will be chosen for publication and giveaway on this blog.

- Once we receive 10 new reviews on our website, we will announce a deadline for the contest.   We keep past submissions on file to be reconsidered for each giveaway.

- The winner will receive the product they reviewed in the mail along with a coupon code for their future order.

We have come along way since we made first homemade soap in the kitchen. Thanks to all of you for supporting our efforts in making the cleanest products on the market! Now, our handmade soaps, pet products, Head to Toe coconut shampoo  and body cleanser and tea tree shampoo bar with clary sage are hot items.  All of our shampoos and natural soaps are sulfate-free.

What could be better for your skin than natural bath products, organic hair care and organic soap with coconut benefits? Don't forget that your skin is your largest organ and absorbs everything transdermally.  What you put on your skin is just as important as what you eat!  Explore the health benefits of coconut and you will learn why itʻs our founding ingredient!  The benefits of coconut for dogs are as important as for humans, so checkout our pet supplies under the Canine Collection on our website.

Aloha Coconutters!

Ok, so we are a couple of days late getting the blog posted.  Coconut Clean had a busy weekend in Jacksonville, FL at the Northeast Florida Veg Fest. The weather was perfect and lots of people came out to enjoy vegan culinary delights, local entertainers, animal friendly vendors, including local crafters and sustainable living education. It was our first experience in Jacksonville and it was great!

We also had a booth at the Central Florida VegFest Oct. 27th it was equally as awesome.  We love the vegan festivals and wish we could have a presence at every one of them nationwide. These festivals help educate us in sustainable living, healthy eating, animal awareness and community.  The vibes are always positive and everybody who attends them leaves with a good feeling about themselves and the planet. Whether you are vegan or not its a great way to get in touch with your community. Our products are vegetarian, vegan and animal friendly, so we feel at home at Veg Fests!
We are hoping to do another review contest this month, so please let everyone know.  We need at least 3 reviews in order to make a contest this month. If we do not have any participation, we canʻt continue with the contest on a monthly basis.
We now have our Body Cleansers on sale for half price so we can make room for our new Head to Toe Shampoo & Body Cleanser. This new product is now available at coconutclean.com Weʻve had some great feedback on the new formula, so try it and write a review!

Check back with us in two weeks for our next blog...

Aloha Coconutters!

Its review time again and we have Octoberʻs WINNER!  Congratulations to Cristine of West Point, New York!

Here is Cristineʻs review:

9/6/2012
Scrub Sampler Pack
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Location: West Point, New York

First of all, I wasn’t expecting to receive my package so fast.  That was great.  When I opened the shipped cardboard box, I was surprised to see that it was an inside-out Crunchmaster Multi-Grain Crackers box.  That threw me off a little, but I found the note inside that said Coconut Clean was earth-friendly which was just fine.  After that, I found the invoice and it was nice to see a handwritten note.  It was from Teresa asking me to find their BlogSpot.  Coconut Clean didn’t strike me as a small family business until I saw the reused box and the handwritten note and put two and two together.  The product itself, Coconut Clean’s Scrub Sampler Pack, was so nicely put together that I didn’t want to open it.  There were two pretty shells tied to the product box with this dyed string stuff (sorry, I don’t know what it’s called!).  Anyways, I got over my undesire to open the product box and untied it.  And I love using these products!  Eight different smells.  Salt scrubs and sugar scrubs.  So nice!  The reason I rated this a 4 instead of a 5 is because, although none of the lids were loose and I could not find any leaks, the product box was oily on the inside.  I couldn’t use the product box to store the scrubs like I had originally planned to.  Regardless, I would definitely by this product again!  (:

Thanks for the great feedback, Cristine!

We weren't sure why the box she received was oily on the inside, but we sent her another one so she could properly store her scrubs. She will receive her free scrub soon!

We didn't have the participation we hoped for this month, so lets make next month more challenging for our judges by giving them lots of great reviews to choose from.

Here are the contest rules for the next submission:

- Write us a review (or two, or three) on a product that youʻve tried and send it along to coconutcleanblog@gmail.com for consideration by November 15th.

- Write about one product per review.

- Include a rating (0-5 stars) as well as your email address (which, will of course remain private), your name, and where you are from.

- Please, enter as many times as you like, although only one review will be chosen per month for publication and giveaway on this blog.
A winner will be chosen on the 18th of every month. We keep past submissions on file to be reconsidered for each monthly giveaway.

Stay tuned for our next feature blog in early November …
